Franklin County is located in northern New York. It borders Canada, and most of the county is within the Adirondack State Park. Franklin County has a total area of approximately 1697 square miles of which 96% is land and 4% water. As of the census of 2000, there were 51,134 people, 17,931 households, and 11,798 families residing in Franklin County, New York. Out of New York's 58 counties, the county ranks as only 44th most populous. The county's name is in honor of Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States.
